Mandaeans by Water is a micro-short documenting the voice of my grandmother who is one of the few remaining indigenous Iraqi-Mandaeans still practicing the religion today. Baptisms and water are a vital part of the community as they are associated with accessing heavenly realms and act as a bridge between the earth and the spiritual world. Throughout the moving images, I spend some time around Mandaean symbology wondering how little I know about where I come from while also appreciating the sound of her voice and the powerful role women play within ethnic minority groups in Iraq and in other regions around the world.
