Canadian Diamonds has a number of inter-relating themes, while primarily functioning as a critique of the representation of history. A narrative is used to signal the inadequacies of narrating history. Events in Canadian history (the 1837 Rebellion; the Visiting Forces Act of 1947) are used to suggest that the struggle history engages against fiction is futile, but should in fact be encouraged, in order to make history politically useful for the present.
