Trio, adapted from a short story by the producer, presents a formulaic melodramatic situation (husband, wife, other man) and demonstrates the elements of that formula. The dominant point of view is the woman's recollection of the events leading up to her present tense situation. The tape puts forward a dichotomy between the tight, claustrophobic "noir" set ups (an individual trapped within a tight frame) and the wide angled set up of the melodrama (which provide individuals freedom to make ultimately futile decisions) which inevitably return to the claustrophobic. Trio visualizes and exaggerates, indeed fetishizes, these genre signs, and in doing so reveals the emotional constipation of all too self-consious individuals.
