Sexual Healing

Su Rynard and Kathleen Maitland-Carter

1995, 24:17 minutes, colour, English

Set against a historical backdrop of the family, western medicine, sexual abuse and alienation from the body, this documentary centres on the testimony and experiences of five unique individuals and the processes by which they have taken back their bodies; from cervical self-examination and performance art to body modification and cyber-sex. Utilizing archival footage and an engaging soundtrack, Sexual Healing traces personal histories from states of abuse to states of sexual expression, empowerment and pleasure; featuring modern primitive anthropologist Raven Rowanchilde; AIDS activist Amber O'Hara; psychotherapist Linda Page; health educator and cultural critic Terri Kapsalis; British cyber-artist Trudy Barber; and excerpts from the infamous Sluts and Goddesses Video Workshop starring NYC's post-porn modernist performance artist Annie Sprinkle.
