Two open narratives act as metaphors for the process of communicating with others. On the one hand, the relationship between voice teacher and student documents how communication is a learned, difficult and in some ways almost mechanical process. The one-to-one intimacy of this scene contrasts with the "aloneness" of the second narrative which employs travel from one point to another, aided and surrounded by an impersonal world, as a metaphor for the difficulties of communication.
