Liabilities - the first ten minutes

Monique Moumblow

1993, 10:00 minutes, colour, English

Liabilities is based on four years of performance work I have done with an alternate persona "Anne Russell". The character "Anne", is autobiographical in nature and originated from a name that my parents decided against calling me when I was born:
Before she was born her parents had an argument about what to name her. Her mother wanted to name her "Anne" after an aunt, but her father wanted to name her "Monique" after a character that appeared in a late-night television movie.
In the video, this leads to the creation of two characters. Anne", whose father is killed in a freak car accident, leaving her mother free to name her, and "Monique" whose father survives and finally chooses her name.
Anne and Monique become the main characters in Liabilities,
recounting a series of mundane (but sometimes fantastic) stories about their lives. What is important within these narratives is that "truth" and "fiction" are not seen as opposing ideas, but as essential parts of each person's autobiography.
