"When I first saw Shirley, I fell in love with her." exclaims Florence in describing a rich friendship that she believes "was made in heaven." Now, after a lifetime together in Montreal, the two Jewish women continue to cherish the ties that have bound them together for 55 years and to celebrate their passion for music which first drew them to each other.
While music remains the glue in their friendship, the two women differ in their sexual orientation. Florence is a lesbian who lived with her partner in an enduring relationship fore 25 years. Shirley, as a young woman, married Florence's brother and now there are seven grandchildren.
They were 10 and 13 years old when they first met. Florence maintains that, attracted by the sounds of Shirley's piano playing, she climbed up the window and introduced herself. Music resonates through the film as through their lives. Now in their mid-sixties, the years have only strengthened this remarkable friendship. As Shirley says, "I have a sister, and I have a brother, but Florence... she is my soul mate."
