White Devil (Interactive Video Installation)

1993, English

TAPECODE 10136

When the visitor enters the interactive video installation White Devil he or she is being watched: The barking and snarling white pitbull terrier , which appears in an artificial ditch simulated by 12 monitors, observes every single movement. Video cameras trace the position of the intruder and forward this information to a computer system, which controls six laser disc players, which again show the movements of the aggressive animal on the monitors. Thus the observer becomes the observed.
The trained watchdog watches over a world which is destined to die: in the background a wall of monitors reveals a big burning villa. Flames are leaking out of a limousine in front of the house. The fence and the dog block the way so that the visitor has to helplessly watch the destruction of wealth.
The fire is a symbol for social conflicts within the world. The visitor becomes the victim and the accused at the same time because he or she is part of a society, the excesses of which one has to watch without being able to intervene. The establishment focuses on material values, barricades itself from any aid and leads itself ad absurdum.
