John Simon establishes an interactive online environment linking the exhibition in the gallery to the space of the World Wide Web. Rather than reproduce the works online, Simon's Web site treats the exhibition as a database, including fragments from the works along with administrative, biographical, and interpretive material that usually stays in the background. A split screen allows the viewer to access any page while, below, the entire contents of the database appear, ordered according to a menu of comparative criteria. Archive Mapper reflects on ways that information is pictured and manipulated in electronic environments as it pushes the envelope of the Web toward transparency and user determined design.
