Sohn Young - Chul

1999, 22:00 minutes, colour

TAPECODE 663.06

The performance installation Ghost's Break Wind is Young-Chul Sohn's first Canadian exhibition. After his graduation in 1989 from the School of Fine Art, Kyoungwon University in Seoul, Sohn earned a reputation for his cutting edge art practice in Korea. In 1991 he faced obscenity charges for his installation/performance Rock to Buddha II where he had attached a golden statue to his nude body. His recent work has involved direct physical contact with the elements, rocks, wind, fire and water as he continues to explore 'the nature of illusionment'.
This piece created for A space questions the authority invested in art history. The opening performance has no particular issue and title - we cannot define or name art. My art contains 'nothing as concept' as well as 'total concept'. I don't insist on spiritual art. Art is a ghost's fart. Every form of life is the ghost fart. It's untouchable, invisible and has no scent. The concept of the performance is about the pre-act in prehistory from Zen ideas of Asian.
The second performance, The Desperate Sleeping is also about the human life, especially in difficulty. In a difficult situation, most people hear a sound from their mind "why don't you change?" "you are the one who can change the situation." The phenomena of the inner sound is an attempt to overcome the difficult situation - the cooperation of inside mind and outside situation create the "new" life. Therefore, the second performance is a struggle to transit from human life to art. '
However, these two parts are not separated one. With these two parts, Ghosts Break Wind.
