In particular, it shows how issues considered to be of interest only to women came to the fore: health care, education, workers' rights, the conduct of the government and the process of independence from Britain.
Amy Bailey, daughter of an eminent family of black school teachers, was a leader of the Jamaican Women's movement in the 1930's. May Farquharson, daughter of a wealthy planter, was an early advocate of "taxing the rich to help the poor" and fought for reproductive rights for women and reforms to benefit the elderly.
Miss Amy And Miss May doesn't shy away from controversy. It shows the two women as fully complex characters. In story and technique this is a warm and inspiring resource. One of the very few resources available in Canada about Jamaica.
