Unearthing the Body 1987-90 Looking back, Lorna Boschman and her collaborators reinterpret their own histories with a defiant humour and honesty.

Scars, 1987, 12:00
In
Scars, four women are interviewed about "slashing" which is for them a form of emotional release. Their faces are never seen: the visuals are of their scarred arms.
The interviews take place in a park: the bark on a tree looks scarred by association, the granite rock looks freckled, and the scars on a woman's arms begin to look natural.
These women challenge the socially accepted forms of self-mutilation: "If I sat here chain smoking, no one would get upset. And that's just as much tissue damage as cutting my arm with a razor."

Our Normal Childhood, 1988 12:00
In
Our Normal Childhood two women recall painful early memories of abuse. Jean Burgess explores her incest experiences through paintings and personal stories. She began drawing her memories in an attempt to give them physical presence in her life. While pursuing those elusive memories, her style developed from child-like drawings to complex archetypical renderings. Lorna Boschman, the producer of the tape, claims her childhood was "normal". "All kids get beaten up, don't they?" The conversation is honest and direct.

Family Secrets, 1990, 6:00
When an adult looks back to childhood, the memories return in fragments. An innocent scenario - the girl and her grandfather fishing - becomes frightening when the woman remembers that she was sexually abused. The film-makers strike a delicate balance between appearance and emotional reality, creating a disturbing film from optically printed reflections and common bits of life.
Family Secrets is also available as part of the Five Feminist Minutes Package.
