Restless Spirit is the fifth in a series of tapes I refer to as Sudden Video. The title of the series is informed by an anthologized literary genre that consists of short, dense and economic works: "Sudden Fiction". Inspired by this genre, I coined the phrase "Sudden Video" as an attempt to make short video works which express complex social, historical and emotional predicaments not easily digested nor intellectually reconciled with lingering effect. By using fictionalized narrative accounts with simple metaphoric images, this work consciously eschews familiar media images predictably associated with traumatic events witnessed either personally or mediated and presented publicly. The work passes quickly, a kind of hit- and-run approach.

a reminder changing the flowers in the vase he surrenders the buds on these stems that fail to open no matter how he wills them otherwise. hours later, after repeatedly rinsing his hands in soapy water, he sits sipping coffee reading reviews of books he will probably never read. the lingering smell of the rotting matter he failed to resuscitate one last time rises from his hands to meet him abruptly with every turn of the page.
