The Quiet Man

1989, 05:00 minutes, English

TAPECODE 9450

This video work suggests conflict in distinguishing between the ideal heterosexual desire presented by society and its media, and the real homosexual desire of an individual. Segment of John Ford's film The Quiet Man are excerpted, showing courting and swooning between a hero and heroine in the 1950's Hollywood style. These segments are comically juxtaposed with scenes of a male couple trying to replicate the swooning, glances, and embraces of the film couple. The presentation reveals the absurd situation of one individual who tries to fit a socially acceptable mold.
