Women's Rights: India

1988, 30:00 minutes, colour

TAPECODE 9501

In this video Indian director Rajiv Vijay Raghavan focuses on the situation of women in his native state of Kerala. Although women there have the highest literacy level and per capita income of all Indian women, oppression is still profound. This is illustrated in the video by a darkly humourous dramatization of an average woman's double working day.
However, Indian women are organizing to demand their rights. Street theatre raises awareness of oppression and questions misconceptions propagated by religion. After a man murders his wife and blames it on evil spirits, the other women in a Kerala fishing village organize to demand his prosecution.
This is a powerful examination of the abuse of women's rights and is suitable for anyone interested in Third World and Indian religion and society, women's rights and human rights.
