The ninety minute debut work, Some Letters to a Young Poet by Vancouver writer/director Richard Story is an elegant meditation on solemn questions of the soul.

Some Letters to a Young Poet is a drama about friendship, courtship, solitude and creativity. Shot is sensuous black & white, the movie features over eighty locations highlighting Vancouver and the surrounding beauty of British Columbia. The story revolves around four characters: Francis & Nina, Remy & Maria. The lead actor, Scott Belway, delivers a vital, engaging performance as Francis, the young poet and stonemason. He is supported by the fine talent of Todd Witham, who plays Remy, the Quebecois street vendor/friend. The main female character is Nina, (Sebina Sella) writing from Germany; we hear Nina's beautiful voice as she reads through her 'letters to a young poet'. And there is Maria (Nadja Durbach): a gently captivating young lady who is a new resident to Canada and a stranger to the English language...silent, lively and enchanting.

The chemistry between these young actors makes for some understated and delightfully humourous scenes which nicely accent the thoughtful, solemn and poetic feel of the movie. The abundance of water, earth and nature imagery is shot in a clean, almost minimalist, yet sensuously-rich style. These images, composed with an almost classical purity, give the surface of the movie a calmness and beauty which perfectly counterbalances the turbulent, dark subtext.

The captivating soundtrack includes music of the Early Renaissance and Japanese Koto music. Some Letters to a Young Poet tells a simple story of friendship and tender beginnings.
