Facing down the idea of dragging a crate of over one hundred three-quarter inch U-matic master tapes and raw footage along on yet another move, I came with the alternative of creating new digital masters and destroying the originals. Bye Bye Three-Quarter Inch began with the documentation of that task.

Research for the essay began in the mid to late 1990’s when I started to hear that ¾ inch U-matic tape media was out and that public institutions were scrambling to curate their archives and to transfer selected material to digital stock. The final draft for the essay was written at the same time of completing the video BYE BYE THREE-QUARTER INCH.
