North of West Gate

1990, 23:00 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 9723

North of West Gate is a thirty minute narrative which moves between harsh social commentary and fantasy-filled adventure. Director / writer Rosalie Bellefontaine backdrops the lively optimism and imagination of childhood with the complexities of poverty. Emma and Mark Meekis debut in this lyrical drama which hinges on the re-telling of their stories. South of their inner city habitat and bordered by a large iron gate is West Gate, Winnipeg's oldest and richest neighbourhood. The narrative stumbles into a plot of ingenuity, cooperation and survival. The soundscape was composed by Blaine Donais.
