Ballerina and the Abject (1993)

Lauren Fournier

2014, 00:22 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 2075.05

During the process of digitizing VHS tapes with the words “Fournier Family Memories” scrawled on the front, the artist collects moments from these memories that are both humorous and that shed light on the artist’s development from the perspective of gender and other socializing forces in a working-class, prairie, Evangelical Christian family. The young girl’s behaviour is held up against middle-class standards and is found wanting.
