Laal Duppatta (Red Veil)

1993, 09:00 minutes, colour

TAPECODE 9826

In Hindu tradition, the red veil is worn during the marriage ritual. In this video, the images refer to: The mannequin who wore the veil in silence, the little girl who aspired to adorn the beautiful garment and the adult woman who unveils the red veil and discovers the cruel realities that were once mistaken for childhood fantasies. The music consists of mantras which are devoted to the soul (spirit), body, and mind - all of which are sacred and pure. The images, however, portray torment and blatantly disparage the meaning of the mantras.
