Queer Lines is an 18-min performance-for-the-camera that came out of an at-home residency with FADO Performance Art Center in the spring/summer of 2021. The process I undertake as an artist is an investigation into the subject-object binary. By using my own body in my performances, I experience the blurry zones of the human body as both subject and object, and the tensions that this creates. In this performance I employ objects such as, a homemade paintbrush (made from my own hair), paint, canvas, straws, a toothbrush as well as other things to use as an extension of my body. Having a body is what it is to be human, and I use this as a tool to anchor myself in my performance work.
Queer Lines is about queer survival during a global pandemic. In the work, I create a ritual for protection for myself and all members of the LGBTQAI2S+ communities. I do this by performing a series of actions around the abstract painting of the traditional Pride flag using acrylic washes on unstretched canvas. Through the audio recording, I have emphasized the sounds of the painting process as a unique soundscape.
Lastly, Queer Lines is influenced by abstract painter Agnes Martin and her use of the horizontal line in her later work. I’m inspired by her queerness, her resistance of Patriarchal norms, and her ability to survive adverse conditions as a lesbian and as an artist.
