Stella Händler was born in 1962 near Basel, Switzerland. Study of Germanistics and Romance Languages and Literature at the University of Basel. Through her work as direction and production assistant in film and theatre, she gains experience in the production and management of cultural projects. In the Nineties, she works as production manager for film, video and theatre and as director of both film and theatre festivals. In 2000, together with Claudia Frei, she starts up the film production company freihändler and produces documentary films and art videos for cinema, television and exhibitions.
