Artist

Stéphane Claude (Ælab)

Founded in 1996 by artists Stéphane Claude and Gisèle Trudel, Æ is an artist unit that invites other collaborators to participate on a regular basis. Ælab designates production projects in a more anonymous context, clearly reflecting their focus on an ecological and technological conscience rooted in the arts and sciences. Æ seeks to reintroduce the world of animal/vegetal/minerals into the electronic arts. Æ produces audiovisual essays, performances, web projects, databases, site specific installations, publications, psycho-geographic walks, and audio recordings that are listened to in the dark...

Stéphane Claude is an electronic/electroacoustic musician and audio mastering engineer. His research is concerned with providing a conceptual framework for audio recordings and sound installations.

As an audio consultant, he has participated in the conception, production and integration of high-end and independent surround sound, digital recording and mastering studios in Montreal and abroad. His work is rooted in ecological design based on optimization of conceptual and physical resources.

Since 1992, he has been preoccupied with the presentation of electronic art, by favoring the notion of 'active listening' and has conceived immersive environments as the technical director and/or sound engineer and/or sound designer for OBORO (2000-present), Oral TAC and Volt AA (2001-05), Atelier InSitu Architects (2002), Mutek: Sound, Music and NewTechnology (2000), Momentum theater company (1999), The Media Lounge of The Festival international du nouveau cinema et nouveaux medias (1997-98), La 3e Fenetre (1995), and Champ Libre (1993-95).
