Karel Malkoun
A human curious about other humans, Karel Malkoun is a Lebanese filmmaker who sees the world through a romantic and playful lens. Her work explores womanhood, youth, memory, migration, and the complex textures of life in Lebanon, often intimately focusing on characters navigating identity and quiet transformation.
Karel lets each film dictate its own form, allowing the work to shape its own genre rather than the other way around. This openness has led her to explore fiction, non-fiction, and hybrid approaches, always driven by experimentation and emotion.
Since 2017, she has written and directed a range of short films, aiming for her work to feel like a journey rather than a message. Her films have screened at renowned festivals such as the Tampere Film Festival, Ji.hlava International Documentary, and the Beirut Shorts International Film Festival, with one film shortlisted for a BAFTA award.
Karel moved to Toronto in 2019 to complete a Master’s in Film at York University. She recently finished her first feature-length non-fiction film, which premiered at the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival in Fall 2025 and received a Special Jury Mention.
