Michelle Mohabeer

Dr. Michelle Mohabeer is a Toronto based, Guyana born Filmmaker/Video artist, teacher, film scholar and writer. She currently teaches in the Departments of Communication Studies and Humanities at York University. Michelle Mohabeer was recently honoured with a retrospective screening and discussion of her film and video work at Jadavpur University at the Annual Canada-India Bilateral Conference in February 2011. Her films have received several international awards and honourable mentions and exhibited at over 150 festivals, conferences, and galleries across North America, Europe (Italy, UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland and France), India, Australia, the Caribbean (Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad, Barbados), and Japan. Professor Mohabeer’s films and videos have been collected by over sixty university libraries across North America, the Caribbean and Australia. Her films have been profiled in the collections and catalogues: Film Fatales, The Romance of Transgression in Canada, North of Everything, The Bent Lens, Women’s Experimental Cinema, and Queering Canada: A Collection of Essays, among others.

She has taught Film Studies, Performance Studies, Visual Culture, Cultural Studies and Women’ Media Studies at the University of Toronto, Trent University, University of Western Ontario, Ryerson University and Sheridan College.
