Re Re-Orientation: The Image as Fantasy and Furniture in Japan

by Peter Callas

Pleasure of the Gaze, 1985, pp. 56-59

Perth: Art gallery of Western Australia, 1985

This is an article for anyone who is interested in the the concept of "indegenisation", or the assimilation of imagery from an outside source. Exploring the attempt to make imagery private, such as having a television in your house, Callas identifies the physical object as an image (as well as advertising) exploiter. This article deals with the importance of image to the Japanese culture as well as the lengths they will go to subvert the importance of or manipulation of it.
