Double Agents: Video Art Addressing Aids

by John Greyson

VIDEO re/VIEW: The (best) Source for Critical Writings on Canadian Artists' Video, 1996, pp. 248-255

Toronto: Art Metropole and Vtape, 1996

Greyson discusses the ways in which interaction between subjects and the use of video played an effective, widely varying role in communication at the Fifth International Conference on AIDS, on June 4th, 1989. in Montreal. He goes on to consider the contrasting nature of the work contributed to the conference's parallel cultural festival, SIDART, focusing on discussion of various AIDS-related work by Canadian artists, which opposes the biases, stereotypes, and "myth of the general public" often found in more propagandistic, profit-driven AIDS awareness video and film.
