Color Schemes, Le Gout Mon Espoir, Shaving, Sales Images
Fuse, Oct. Fall 1990, v. 14, no. 1+2, pp. 50-51
The author describes four pieces in Toronto's Images '90 festival, providing three positive reviews, and one negative. He commends Michael Smart's Shaving, a funny experimental video exploring the adult male's many-sided relationship to the act of shaving, Sales Images by Michel de Gagne, Remy Beausoleil, and Michel Gelina, an arresting and fast-paced abstract film collage examining "spectatorship, representation, and media fascism", and Shu Lea Cheang's Color Schemes, a formally inventive, political but accessible exploration of racial stereotypes. Munger discredits Alex Roshuk's Le gout de Mon Espoir, a video chronicling a "summer romance" between a mature man and woman, from the (arguably problematic) woman's perspective.
