This article originally appeared in Interview magazine, September 1999 and is now available online. It features an interview of the Iranian-American artist Shirin Neshat by Octavia Zaya. Neshat's works which mainly focus on Muslim women discusses her artwork and images of Islam which are "lifting the veil on a world largely unknown to the West." Her mission is to further the discussion of what life is like in the modern Islamic world to hopefully interest people from within the culture and people outside of it. She also discusses her next project which is a piece filmed half in Turkey and half in the U.S, about the two opposing cultures facing each other. Neshat is known for her dual screen video installations such as "Rapture" and "Turbulent."
