Deliver us from truth...: The recent video work of Philip Jonlin Lee
Art Star 3 Video Art Biennial Exhibition Catalogue - 2007 Galerie SAW Gallery, Oct. 2007
An analysis of a programme of video works by Philip Jonlin Lee, featuring two separate programs. The first suite, Provisional Journey, summons a "deeply cerebral dreamscape" that is ambiguously "hallucinatory vision or straightforward fiction," as articulated from a recurring and central figure of the Narrator. In consistent voice-over, the Narrator revisits personal myths, family ties, and absence, against the backdrop of Hong Kong streets. The second suite, In a Fugue State, also relies on the Narrator to enable the works and explores similar themes like a loss of awareness of one's identity, blindness, and psychic conflict.
