So You Want To Be Popular
Los Angeles Weekly, Oct. 24, 1988
Review of Jeanne C. Finley's short film So You Want to be Popular? The reviewer praises the directness and formalism of the approach the filmmaker uses to make a point about the intolerance for difference within the school community. An adult remembers his youth while we see images of an abandoned school. This in turn is cut with a 1940s instructional film on fitting in in high school. A collage of found footage further illustrates the lack of tolerance for individuality in the school system and beyond, implying this same conformity that applies to schools, applies to our political system as well. The author argues the necessity for the boldness and directness of this message in the face of sameness.
