Lida Abdul: Performing Architectures

by Anthony Kiendl

Lida Abdul, 1996, pp. 12-21

Banff: The Banff Centre, 1996

Clapping with Stones, one of Lida Abdul's videos presented in the 51st Venice Biennale, reflects on the destruction of Buddha statues in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. In this essay Abdul's performance-based videos, which concentrate on place, environment and subsequently architecture, are examined in relation to a number of theorists and authors including Michel Foucault, Gianni Vittamo and Georges Bataille. The monumental, destroyed and the degraded architectural models are taken into consideration in respect to Abdul's works: Clapping with Stones, Landscape I and White House.
