The Island at the Centre of the Earth
Toronto: Trinity Square Video, 2006
The Island at the Centre of the Earth is a video installation by Lethbridge-based artist Michael Campbell.
The piece was created during Cambell's month long Artist-in-Residence Program at Trinity Square Video.
The Island is a video inspired by Admiral Byrd's ill-fated weather observation outpost in Antartica in 1933. The video shows Cambell as an average suburban male, dressed in a bathrobe and doing mundane tasks while pacing through a bunker. Campbell was interested in representing the explorer as an anti-hero and challenging traditional male stereotypes.
