Duet: Etude for Solitudes: Laiwan
YYZine, Spring 2006
Laiwan is a Vancouver-based artist whose interactive installation Duet: Etude for Solitude "brings two musicians into dialogue through technology." The two musicians, Lori Freedman and Susie Ibarra, both use improvisation as a means of creating their work. In Laiwan's installation the visitor uses two piano keyboards to improvise their own Freedman/Ibarra duet with corresponding video clips of the musicians. According to the author, Laiwan's work questions the authority of the digital age and its ability to physically divide people from each other.
