On Candice Breitz's Becoming

Hayden utilizes Lacanian notions of identity formation to explore Candice Breitz's dual channel video installation. In Becoming (2003), Breitz's creates shot-by-shot re-enactments of scenes from romantic comedies such as, Pretty Woman, The Sweetest Thing, and You've Got Mail as a means for subverting western notions of the "feminine ideal". Breitz situates herself in a mimetic juxtaposition to various female leads acknowledging not only her enactment but the actresses' interpretation of the character. Becoming plays with shifting positions of self, other, identification and duality allowing for a multivalent interpretation of how commercial pop culture has entered the collective unconscious.
