Spotlight: Douglas Gordon

by Melissa Dunn

Flash Art, Feb., no. 228

An overview of Douglas Gordon's video installation piece Play Dead, Real Time. In 1903, Thomas Edison film cameras caught the electrocution of the elephant "Minnie" on Coney Island. Excavating cinema's macabre moments, Gordon recreates a parallel spectacle a hundred years later on two large perpendicular screens at the Glasglow Gallery. Resurrecting this footage, Gordon, creates a link between the rise and fall of cinema as a means for preserving memory.
