Chick Flicks

by Matt Ashare

The Boston Phoenix, July 19, 1996

After creating Femme Flicke, a 'zine dedicated to women in film(which was so successful that seven times the amount of the original run was printed), Tina Spangler decided to take things one step further. By presenting the Femme Flicke film festival, Spangler responded to the demand for more accessibility to the films she covered in her 'zine and the need for their screenings outside of academia and arthouse cinema. Selecting some of the best films, which she already had in her possession from being sent screeners for review in her 'zine, Spangler's festival showcased works by filmmakers such as Lucy Thane, Tammy Rae Carland and Sarah Jabobson and began a much needed dialogue about the work that transformed people from mere readers to viewers.
