Sodom North: Bash Back: A Video Series Curated by Sara Diamond & Karen Knights
Matriart, Summer 1990, v. 1, no. 2, pp. 12-14
In accordance with the upcoming 1990 Vancouver Gay Games, curator Sarah Diamond and Karen Knights have compiled a selection of queer video art that play out the personal politics of the homosexual experience in reaction to marginalization from the Canadian mainstream. Sodom North thus not only provides visibility for queer groups, but also offers a range of strategies for cultural resistance through selection of works offering inclusive analysis, representation and criticism of a plethora of queer issues in the agency if their queer producers.
Emphasizing discursive potentials of screening pleasure-filled subject matter instead of the conventional celebrative presentation of sexuality, Diamond strives to confront the linguistic and cultural practices of power and authority operated by individuals and communities through appropriation and reclamation of identity.
