Seeing Splinters: The Videos of Raphael Montanez Ortiz
Art Star 3 Video Art Biennial, 2007
Ottawa: Galerie SAW Gallery, 2007
Curator Jacob Korczynski comments on Raphael Montanez Ortiz's video art, which addresses the contemporary role of the video medium in subverting conventional linear narratives. Working since the 1950s, Ortiz turned to video art to understand traditional paradigms of cinematic production (or rupturing of the cinematic body through the "spasm" (MacDonald 1998, 333)). Citing that video revives cinema by enabling new modes of historical reception and dissemination, Korcyznski feels that Ortiz's appropriation of First Nations perspectives to transform and generate multiplicitous and hybrid cultural meanings.
