Artist Battle's pirates: Installation shows most swashbucklers were no Jack Sparrow

A review of Christina Battle's video and installation work Uncharted Histories: Pirates - which plays with the motifs of pirates. The installation consists of three parts; excerpt from a pirates' diaries, a video summarizing the biographies of well known pirates and a light-table transparency of an aged world map with bleak sound component. The peice seeks to undermine romantic notions the pirates which have been steeped in popular culture the most recent incarnation being the notion of the pirate as a pretty boy megastar.
