On Jona Mekas' "Diaries, Notes, and Sketches"

by Scott Hammen

Afterimage, Feb. 1976, v. 3, no. 8, pp. 6-7

Scott Hammen provides a personal reflection on his experience of the first edit of Jonas Mekas’ Diaries, Notes, and Sketches. Mekas is offering a cinematic counterpoint to the traditional literary form. His first edit uses 3 years of 25 years worth of footage. Mekas’ film is poetic celebration of life in New York City, focusing on domestic vignettes taken from the artist’s life. Hammen recounts seven scenes in detail, providing insight into larger themes, emotional content, and Mekas’ film making techniques.
