Independent film: where's the audience?

by Scott MacDonald

Afterimage, Mar. 1978, v. 5, no. 9, pp. 6-7

In this article, Scott MacDonald questions the practices of important film institutions that often exclude experimental and independent film, asserting that examination of such films enriches the appreciation of the conventional canon. He asks that independent film be granted the same leap of faith that first-time viewers grant to “established” avant-garde forms such as the French New Wave.
