Johanna Billing: This is how we walk on the moon
Mercer Union, July 3, 2009
Toronto: Mercer Union, 2009
This exhibition catalogue accompanied the July 3 to August 15 programme at the Mercer Union centre for contemporary art, featuring the work of video artist Johanna Billing. Her piece, This is How We Walk on the Moon features a group of four musicians being given a sailing lesson. Inspired by Billing’s time in Edinburgh listening to music in which the sea featured prominently but made by those who had little or no actual relationship with the ocean in their daily lives, the video reads almost as a pedagogical exercise meant to foster self-esteem and encourage teamwork.
