Choreography of Cinema: An Interview with Shirley Clarke
Afterimage, Dec. 1983, v. 11, no. 5, pp. 8-11
Interview with Shirley Clarke tracking her interest in experimental, documentary, and feature films chronologically, but omitting discussion of her recent forays into video. However, the author suggests that, because at the time of the interview she was editing video, the discussion is informed by its sensibilities. Clarke suggests that all her films are variations on the contrast between fantasy and reality. She discusses the camera as a dancer in her experimental films, her involvement in direct cinema and the improvisational, antiauthoritarian style of documentary it engendered, and the theme of alienation in her features. As a woman filmmaker, Clarke emphasizes her conscious decision to provide a unified front with other women, and acknowledges that, although she benefitted from the attention paid to her as a novelty, she found her work excluded by her colleagues from important collections.
