Pomp and Circumstance: The Coronation of Nam June Paik
Afterimage, Oct. 1982, v. 10, no. 3, pp. 12 -16
A detailed article and review of Nam June Paik's life and artwork, to coincide with an exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The article investigates some of the influences of Paik's illustrious career, including a meeting with John Cage, involvement with Fluxus - which led to many video installation and performances. The article also describes the somewhat absurd nature of an exhibition of Paik's work behind glass cases as opposed to it's original purpose of audience interaction. Video and video sculpture is represented, as Gever describes "where technology meets social theory". Paik is elevated as genius, politically driven, and a myth-maker.
