Video Revolution: Patricia Sloane discusses the work of Nam June Paik

by Patricia Sloane

Art and Artists, Mar. 1972, v. 6, no. 12, pp. 28-31

In this brief article, Sloane discusses Paik's philosophies of video art, specifically addressing a recent show. She identifies Paik as aiming to return video art to an artist-driven grassroots away from the institutions and commercial interests who have co-opted its revolutionary elements. According to Sloane, Paik warns these commercial origins and sheer expense of video equipment make it a fundamentally co-opted art anyway. Sloane does not hesitate to mention that Paik's video synthesiser, which he has created at a cost of $37,000, has largely been funded by arts foundations. Paik speaks about the future of video art on cable TV and wall-to-wall screen TV screens which will transform it into a monumental and undeniably present art form.
