A review of several recent screenings and shows. Wooster criticizes Music Video: The Industry and Its Fringes at the MOMA for being too populist and presenting little more than a history of rock and roll beginning with the Beatles, although some cultural critique can be perceived in some of the more avant-garde videos. She reviews a more art-based music video genre in the work of Joe Tripician and Merrill Aldighieri, which reflects the fashion and art world in a twisted sci-fi mirror. As a counterpoint to music video culture, the long takes in Steven Kolpan's He/She prove that MTV's adoption of the 4-second edit and its popularization have made tape-length duration radical. The second half of her article looks at tapes that emphasize the contrast between nature and the digital image through creative approaches to landscape.
