by Frank Gillette

Design Quarterly, 1974, no. 90, pp. 33 - 34

"Difference and Resemblance: Precis for Track/Trace, a Video Work by Frank Gillette" describes Gillette's Track/Trace as he explores notions of time, self, and contemplation. The installation consists of fifteen television monitors presented in a pyramidal-tiered formation with five monitors as its base. One of three television cameras picks up image of the viewer and displays it on the monitor at the top, which from there filters down the rows incrementally three seconds from the last. The viewer is able to see their own solitary performance and its relationship to time. An image of the installation is included as well as the layout of the gallery.
