Crises of Language and Difference
Afterimage, Nov. 1989, v. 17, no. 4, pp. 3-20
Within "Crises of Language and Difference," Kotz analyzes and critiques the efficacy of th 35th Annual Robert Flaherty Seminar, which focussed on third-world, multicultural, and minority programming addressing themes of race, cinema, and representation. Kotz claims that "positions and divisions were restaged in a new setting without pushing the boundaries of dialogue or analysis" (3). Even though many scholars and artists were in attendance, lack of time and structure proved to be an issue, with regards to critically engaging with the "third-world" film and video.
