Whether Maps: Pedagogic Strategies in Recent Video
Afterimage, Dec. 1990, v. 18, no. 5, pp. 10 - 13
"Whether Maps" looks at video artists' works and suggests "how teachers might change the relations of discourse in the classroom" (10). Matthew Sommerville draws upon Gregory Ulmer's theoretical work on teaching in the paradigm of electronic media. Sommerville examines the work of Scott Rankin, Patrick Clancy and Gwen Widmer, specifically how their use of video tampers with language, such as signifier play and allegorical address.
